HTML Editors

Coffee Cup
This HTML editor offers both a powerful functionality and a straightforward and compact interface. The software has many features, from HTML scripting to Flash animations. An excellent tutorial accommodates beginners. The program includes many samples and templates, including JavaScript-based widgets such as a calendar. CoffeeCup HTML Editor provides you with a complete list of tags. Pressing the Table button immediately generates a demonstration model in which you can change all the configurations and settings. The application replaces the standard OK and Cancel buttons with Cool! and No Way!, which is either refreshing or annoying. Still, considering everything it provides, CoffeeCup HTML Editor is well worth the download.

HTML KIT
Don't let HTML Kit's small (8.42MB) program size, pretty interface, or freeware status fool you. Underneath it all lurks a fully equipped coding and editing toolbox that can hold its own against HTML editors three times its size. With a fully customizable workspace, syntax highlighting for most coding languages, and timesaving batch actions, this tool may be the only editor you'll ever need. Its built-in FTP support, extensibility, and prechewed templates and code snippets may make it all you ever wanted. The only things HTML Kit leaves out are an offline Help database, more plug-in documentation, a paste-as-code feature, and the ability to fetch coffee.

DREAMWEAVER
Dreamweaver MX was a great leap forward for integrated site design, but it suffered from buggy performance and an unorganized user interface. Macromedia has ironed out the kinks with 2004, making significant improvements while adding a host of new features.

The overhauled user interface vastly improves on the previous version of Dreamweaver. Many controls are now easier to find and more consistent with the rest of Macromedia's MX product line. You'll also find simpler and more powerful tools for working with cascading style sheets (CSS).

New features and refinements abound in this release. One of our favorites is the dynamic cross-browser validator, which automatically checks tags and CSS rules for compatibility across multiple Web browsers. We also like the ability to copy and paste stylized data from Word and Excel documents.

Dreamweaver MX 2004 is definitely a best-in-class application, but it will take a big bite out of your system resources--and your wallet. We'd love to see a lighter, cheaper edition of Dreamweaver that focuses more on single-page design.
